A Bit Of History:
In 1834 Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville founded the City of Mandeville. At the time the Marigny family owned nearly 1/3 of the Real Estate in the City of New Orleans. Although Bernard lived in New Orleans he did own a profitable plantation in St. Tammany Parish located on what is now “Fontainbleau State Park”.
Bernard purchased 5,000 acres west of his plantation and Bayou Castine in order to fulfill his plans to develop a new town. The plans for what was to become The City of Mandeville were finalized in 1834. These plans spelled out elements such as churches, structures, streets, wharves and the Lake Pontchartrain Waterfront.
Bernard provided steamship service between New Orleans and Mandeville to
help stimulate Real Estate sales and Mandeville soon became a refuge for New Orleans residents eager to escape the summer heat. The boat service continued into the 20th century and included New Orleans Jazz Bands to entertain the passengers. The bands would play on the ships as well as in the pavilions, dance halls and music halls popped up in Mandeville. This established Mandeville as a popular destination for music and culture outside of the City of New Orleans.
Old Mandeville:
Your first visit to Lakeshore Drive on the Lakefront is striking with the blend
of the old, historic Mandeville homes and Lakefront activity. Marigny’s original plan required that the Lakefront always be open and available to residents. Our Lakefront is protected by a seawall and includes
walking/bicycle paths, playgrounds, gazebos and lots of green space. Almost every evening and weekend will find lots of local residents enjoying a cool breeze while they walk, jog or relax by the lake and take in the beautiful homes. If the mood suits you stop at one of the many establishments on Lakeshore Drive where you can enjoy a cool drink or some of Louisiana’s world famous seafood.
Mandeville has more to see than just the Lakefront. A stroll through the neighborhood also reveals more restaurants, specialty shops and culturalactivities. If live theater is your passion then Northstar Theater on Girod St. is the place for you. Mandeville’s Jazz tradition also continues on with a visit to Ruby’s Road House and the Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall.
Water Sports:
Are you a sailor? Mandeville has four Marinas with direct access to Lake Pontchartrain: Prieto Marina, Colbert Cove Marina, Mariner Village Marina and Heron’s Way Marina. Click on these links for more information.
If you have a competitive boating spirit then the Pontchartrain Yacht Club may be what you are looking for. The club is located at the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Jackson Street with an unobstructed view of Lake Pontchartrain. For more information please view their website at http://www.pontyc.org/.
The Tammany Trace:
I can’t leave without discussing one of the crown jewels of St. Tammany Parish. That is the Tammany Trace. The Trace is part of the National Rails To Trails Conservancy and currently spans 28 miles of St. Tammany Parish. It is perfect for walkers, joggers, skaters and bicyclists who want lots of scenery with very little road traffic.
The City of Mandeville purchased land along the Trace and built the
Mandeville Trailhead. This full block complex features Mandeville’s Cultural Interpretative Center, rest rooms, a music pavilions, an amphitheater, a tower and children's splash fountain. In addition to being a rest stop for the weary Trace traveler there are Friday night summer concerts in the amphitheater and a Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning. You can even rent a bicycle at a nearby Cafe and ride down to the Lakefront.
Mandeville has all this and much more to offer in addition to a wonderful Real Estate experience. But don’t take my word for it, come and see for yourself.
