A Bit of History:
Madisonville, Louisiana was founded in 1800 and was then known as the town of Coquille because of the large number of oyster shells in the nearby waters.  It was renamed Madisonville in 1810 after President James Madison.  Before the Civil War, Madisonville provided vital port services between the towns along the Tchefuncte and New Orleans.  When New Orleans was captured by Union Forces the local economy suffered from the lack of trade and did not recover for years afterwards.
